Three New Years Eve travellers on Concorde are diverted from the 31st December 1999 to March 2516 via an unscheduled five-hundred year stop-over in the Polar Ice Cap.

Long after the societal and economic upheavals from global warming, obese Vermont billionaire Joseph Sigmund-Hanson the Third, neurotic New York economist and journalist Sebastian Huggins, and The Right Honourable Sarah Beck MP, UK Secretary of State for Education, are revived by a scientific team led by the beautiful centenarian, Doctor Eloise Le Friac, from Angel Gabriel City, an aerial community. Sebastian wakes and falls in love with Eloise, as in a Midsummer’s Night Dream.

Joe, refusing to believe the reality of their cryogenic adventure and finding himself in a society operated by instant communications, collective agreements and, crucially for a self-made billionaire, without money, assumes they have been kidnapped by communists; albeit courteous non-violent communists.

Sebastian, rebuffed by Eloise, goes to New-New-York, a phenomenal two mile high construction, in search of love, lust and, after five-hundred-and-sixteen years of involuntary abstinence, sexual release; becoming entangled with the compelling, evil Mind-Warrior Lethean, the villain of the story, and meets the fabulously attractive courtesan, Amas.

Joe, the world’s one-hundred-and-fortieth richest man, travels to Abe-Lincoln-City high in the Rockies in Washington State, to locate the seat of power, where he is befriended by Senator Clarke Hull.

Sarah Beck becomes homesick but, temporally and geographically displaced, is there any hope in this world of miraculous science that she could contact her family again? She settles in Magdalen College, Oxford, and investigating time-travel goes to CERN, Geneva to meet the child-prodigy-physicist, Marc Blanc.

Sebastian puts them all in great danger from Lethean, a Mind-Warrior, who pits himself against Eloise, a formidable opponent. The combatants converge on Albatross Sanctuary, an artificial island for ornithologists in the South Atlantic close to Antarctica, where Joe demonstrates heroic qualities and the drama is played out.  Antarctica, changed by global warming, is an emerging uninhabited, but still very cold, new continent.

Will our displaced heroes overcome Lethean and find true happiness? Read the book.

The science, global-warming and the economic and political environment, all based on current 21st Century developments, are intended to be credible and even likely. Our heroes learn to use the Q-Field, the logical extrapolation of today’s Information Society, develop relationships with their personal bio-fitted computers, and they travel via a Space-Chimney, which looks very like a Flying Saucer, to the Heliopause, at the very edge of our solar system, where they realise their need for and love of mankind.

It’s a story of hope and optimism that raises philosophical issues including: the sanctity of capital; how will people spend their lives when they live one-hundred-and-eighty years in good health; and what is it that eventually makes them, and us, die?

The style is open and humorous, laced with adventure, drama and tragedy. It’s a good read - a page turner – foretelling the future and retelling the archetypal tale of humanity’s evolution and endless internal struggle between evil, love and life; and our search for relationships, meaning and identity.

It will make a great film.

My next book is Over the Rainbow – a dramatic, fast moving novel tracking global warming from 2000 to 2020.

Over the Rainbow

A page turning tale of survival and courage and the foul murder of an inspired heroine, set in London, England during the coming time of global-flooding and global-flu.  The book also accurately tracks the scientific reports underlying concerns for the 80% of humans living on the coastal margins, and medical fears of a global pandemic from H5N1 avian influenza.
